What a Metal Recycling Facility Asks of Its Civil Works

A scrap processing site is one of the harder industrial briefs in civil construction, and almost all of the difficulty is in the ground. Loaded trucks arrive continuously, material is dropped, stacked and moved by grab and magnet, and the yard surface takes impact loading that a conventional industrial slab is not designed for. The yard here was engineered for that duty cycle — surfacing, falls and drainage specified for constant heavy plant movement rather than occasional access. It is the same discipline behind the DBMSC steel yard in Hamriyah Free Zone, where open platforms carry stacked steel under continuous point loading.

The weighbridge is the other point where this kind of facility is won or lost. Every load in and out crosses it, so its foundation has to be built dead level and stay that way under permanent heavy axle loading — settlement of a few millimetres puts the whole operation’s weights, and therefore its invoicing, in question. Midas Building Contracting delivered the yard, the weighbridge foundation and civil infrastructure, and the buildings across the site.

Building in Sajja Industrial Area

Sajja sits inland from Sharjah’s free zones and works to a different set of rules — Sharjah Municipality jurisdiction rather than a free zone authority, with its own approval route, utility connections and inspection regime. Contractors who work exclusively inside Hamriyah or SAIF Zone often find that unfamiliar. Midas builds across all three, so the approval path in Sajja is a known quantity rather than something learned on the client’s programme. Steel, Power and Systems Under One Contract

Midas Metal Industries fabricated and erected the steel structures for the warehouses and office block. Midas Electromechanical Contracting — the group’s SEWA Grade 1 approved electrical division — designed, installed and commissioned the electrical and mechanical systems across the facility: power distribution, lighting, HVAC to the office block, and the heavier services the yard and warehouse operations run on.

Three entities, one programme, one point of accountability. On a site where the yard, the buildings and the weighbridge all have to work together from day one, that is the difference between a handover and a snag list. The same model delivered the Sprint warehouses, office and yard facility in Hamriyah Free Zone and the Tamra Alloys plant.
