30,000 m² Gantry Crane Yard for DBMSC Steel

Steel yard construction is the most demanding civil work most people never notice. For DBMSC — the UAE’s largest independent structural steel stockholder, established in 1970 — Midas EPC built a 30,000 m² steel-handling yard in Hamriyah Free Zone, Sharjah: three gantry crane bays with open asphalt platforms for the efficient handling and storage of steel products.

What Steel Yard Construction Actually Involves

The engineering centre of gravity on this project was below ground and underfoot. Gantry cranes running true under full load demand concrete foundations and rail alignments built to tight tolerances, and the 22,936 m² of open asphalt platforms had to be engineered for constant point loading from stacked steel — with drainage and settlement control across a surface that takes punishment every working day. Midas Building Contracting delivered the foundations, platforms and civil works; Midas Metal Industries fabricated the steel structures for the crane bays and the yard’s supporting components.

A steel stockholder’s yard is a throughput machine — every square metre either moves product or slows it down. The layout was engineered around DBMSC’s handling flows so the three gantry crane bays cover the storage and loading zones without conflict.

Fire Fighting Systems by a Civil Defence Approved Contractor

A 30,000 m² steel yard is a regulated fire-safety environment, and the approved drawings show it: a dedicated pump room and an above-ground GRP fire-fighting water tank are part of the built scope. The fire fighting and fire alarm systems were designed, installed and commissioned by Midas Electromechanical Contracting, a Sharjah Civil Defence approved fire fighting contractor and the group’s SEWA Grade 1 approved electrical division — meaning the yard’s fire protection carries the approvals Hamriyah Free Zone Authority and Civil Defence require, delivered inside the same single contract as the civil and steel works.
